Plant Talker

How many times have you heard someone criticizing a gardener, or a plant parent, that they are talking to their plants? We tend to gossip about this, that they are crazy, how they spend most of their time in front of their plants, touching their leaves, peeking below their leaves and even smelling their flowers. So are they really talking to their plants?

I think the plants are the ones talking to them. Through their leaves, which we stare at we learn if they need to be placed in a shadier location, or that they need a net shade canopy. Or if they lack sunlight that their leaves are starting to droop. They all convey this with us just staring at their foliage.

Then there are times, we see them, looking under the leaves. This is because we are checking for worms, aphids, spridermites, etc. These are pests that can affect the plants health and sometimes cause its demise if left unchecked. Treatment may be needed, and this is mostly seen in their foliage as well.

Lastly, we see them, smelling the flowers. I think the plant is saying in this instance that all is doing well. The beautiful flower is like a sign. They grace us as plant parents of their beauty for a job well done in growing them.

And so, when you see someone, standing in front of a plant or plants, they are indeed talking to each other. I think it is not crazy or weird, but is just like a simple bond between friends, unlike any other.
